Turku’s Deputy Mayor Mirka Muukkonen has called for urgent action regarding abandoned or soon-to-be-demolished properties in the city. She emphasized the need for an assessment of these buildings to expedite their demolition. According to Muukkonen, a recent fire at a small apartment building in Raunistula, which completely engulfed the structure and resulted in the tragic death of a 30-year-old man, highlights the dangers posed by neglected properties.
The abandoned buildings in the area not only pose significant hazards but also a considerable fire risk, Muukkonen noted. Many of these structures have been vacant for years and are known to be beyond repair. She expressed concern over vandalism and possible arson, particularly as temperatures drop, increasing the likelihood of individuals starting fires in these sites.
Muukkonen advocates for the controlled demolition of these buildings before they pose further risks. “I hope that these properties can be demolished and the debris removed promptly to prevent the occurrence of further fires,” she stated.
The situation of a nearby establishment, Sillankorva, which is transitioning to temporary accommodations, is particularly troubling for Muukkonen. She believes it is also at risk and should be demolished without delay, given its condition.
In an effort to address the issue, Muukkonen plans to raise these concerns at the next city leadership meeting and has encouraged residents to report any risky properties through the city’s website. There is a map available for citizens to mark locations that require attention, and she urges community organizations to participate actively in this initiative.
