A barn measuring approximately 2,500 square meters has burned in Siikajoki, North Ostrobothnia, with about 70% of the structure destroyed, according to firefighter Joona Meriläinen. The rescue services reported that around twenty cattle were saved, though initial estimates suggested there were about fifty animals inside the barn at the time of the fire. Meriläinen noted that the actual number of cattle was higher than anticipated, but the precise figure of those rescued is still unclear.
Unfortunately, numerous animals perished in the blaze, with estimates reaching into the dozens. The barn’s personnel collaborated closely with rescue teams to mitigate the damage. They used an excavator to create a division in the structure, allowing them to save a section where calves were housed. Thankfully, there were no reports of human injuries.
On Sunday morning, crews were working on extinguishing any remaining hot spots and clearing debris at the site. Meriläinen described the damage as significant, and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The local animal welfare authorities were also present, with a veterinarian assessing the needs of the surviving animals.
The alarm for the large barn fire on Vaara-ahontie was raised just before midnight on Saturday evening. The Oulu police announced early Sunday morning that they are investigating the cause of the fire.
