The Apple Festival in Sandur kicks off today for the first time in five years. The festival was halted during this period due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now it is back in full swing and aims to make a significant impact this year.

Michael Anthony Charles, one of the organizers, emphasizes the importance of local produce: “It should be profitable to be a vegetable farmer in the Faroe Islands.”

The festival celebrates Faroese agriculture, with a focus on local vegetable production, which Charles notes is lacking: “It would be desirable to see more Faroese vegetables in the shops in the Faroe Islands.” This year’s Apple Festival highlights the need for increased local vegetable production.

The day’s events began with a panel discussion titled “Should we have a commercial vegetable production in the Faroe Islands?” Following the discussion, attendees can participate in apple sack races, a beef pulling competition, a concert, and dancing in the evening.

The festival is organized by local volunteers, as Charles points out.

The festival is set to be an enriching experience for locals and visitors alike, celebrating Faroese culture and produce.
