Skateboarders frustrated by vandalism at pump tracks and skate parks in Joensuu, Kontiolahti, and Vaasa

In Joensuu, Kontiolahti, and Vaasa, skateboarders are expressing frustration over vandalism affecting popular pump tracks and skate parks. Recently, significant damage was reported at the new pump track and skate area in Joensuu’s Penttilä district, where holes were burned into the asphalt using electric scooters and mopeds. The skate park, which opened about a month ago alongside the pump track, is now partially unusable due to these actions. Skateboarder Aleksi Martikainen noted that the small wheels of skateboards hit the dangerous holes, making it difficult and risky to use the facility.

Martikainen believes the remote location of Penttilän Sahaniityn park contributes to the vandalism, suggesting that placing recreational areas in more central locations could deter such destructive behavior. Repair plans for the asphalt remain unclear, and even if patched, the surface will still be compromised. Matias Hiltunen, another active skateboarder, reported that he learned about the vandals through social media, with witnesses confirming the incidents happened in broad daylight. Following the incident, he filed a police report.

These acts of vandalism are not isolated; similar behavior has been noted at newly opened facilities, including the pump track in Vaasa, where unauthorized vehicles have caused damage. Furthermore, in Kontiolahti, there have been reports of mopeds using the newly opened pump track. Local officials are considering fencing areas to prevent further vandalism and improve safety.

Pump tracks, increasingly popular in Finland, are asphalted areas featuring turns and bumps, designed for riding with various wheeled devices, including skateboards and bicycles.
