Elokapina protest expected to disrupt traffic in Helsinki today

An environmental protest organized by the movement Elokapina is expected to cause significant and prolonged traffic disruptions in Helsinki today, according to the Helsinki police. The demonstration will feature three processions departing from Dallape Park, East Harbor, and Senate Square, all aiming to reach the Parliament House around 5 PM.

The police recommend allowing extra time for travel within the city center as they may redirect traffic as necessary. Helsinki police chief Jere Roimu emphasized the force’s role in ensuring the protestors’ right to free expression, maintaining public order and safety, and safeguarding the rights of other citizens. He noted that there are currently no indications that the protests are turning violent.

Elokapina has addressed concerns about the protest’s safety on social media, highlighting the heightened attention the event is receiving and the possibility of attempts to disrupt it. In response, Roimu stated that the police are adequately prepared for today’s activities.

When asked about potential external threats of violence against demonstrators, he acknowledged it is always a possibility. The police are aware of online threats directed at Elokapina, which the movement has communicated to them, and they are working to address these concerns in their operations.

The police are in discussions with the protest’s organizers to minimize disruptions for other residents. They indicated that if the protest significantly violates the law, threatens public order or safety, or obstructs traffic, they may intervene by providing instructions, directives, or ultimately deciding to dissolve the protest. The evaluation of such interventions will be based on the situation at hand.
