The Oulu District Court has started hearing a case today regarding acts of violence that occurred in Oulu’s Kaukovainio last summer. A local man was seriously assaulted in the yard of an apartment building on Nuolihaukantie in the early hours of June 15. According to the charges, the man was chosen as a victim completely at random, and the situation developed suddenly.

The prosecutor states that three foreign men are involved, with one facing charges of attempted murder and the other two charged with aggravated assault. Previous reports indicate that the suspects are Polish construction workers who came to Finland. The man accused of attempted murder allegedly struck the victim at least once with a knife in his hand and side. Following this, the three men are accused of beating and kicking the victim in unison. It is also alleged that the victim was struck or attempted to be struck with a tire iron during the incident. The victim lay on the ground for part of the time and sustained serious injuries.

The prosecutor demands prison sentences for all three defendants, calling the violence inflicted on the victim not only surprising but also brutal and merciless. The man accused of attempted murder denies the charge but admits to committing aggravated assault. The two men facing aggravated assault charges argue that they committed only basic assault.

In addition to the serious charges, the court will also address lesser incidents from the same day. The man accused of attempted murder faces additional charges for assaulting another individual by kicking him forcefully in the head. He denies this allegation, claiming he only struck the man in the torso, categorizing it at most as minor assault. Furthermore, he is accused of threatening a third man with a knife, which he completely denies. A verdict from the Oulu District Court is expected later. The accused man is participating in the proceedings from pre-trial detention.
