Seismic activity raises concerns over potential eruptions and gas emissions near Vogar, Iceland

Seismic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula has raised concerns regarding potential gas emissions during a possible volcanic eruption near Vogar on the Vatnsleysuströnd. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has outlined three scenarios for upcoming eruptions in the Sundhnúkur volcanic system, one of which suggests that an eruption could occur northeast of Stóra-Skógfell, similar to the eruption that began on August 22.

Meteorologist Bergdís Arna Óladóttir presented these scenarios at a community meeting, stating that while lava reaching Vogar is considered unlikely, significant air pollution could affect the town if a particular scenario occurs. The increase in volcanic activity has prompted discussions around implementing protective measures, such as barriers.

The first scenario forecasts an eruption south of Sundhnúk, potentially resembling the eruption that began on January 14. The second scenario anticipates an eruption between Sundhnúk and Stóra-Skógfell, akin to previous eruptions recorded on December 18, February 8, March 16, and May 29 of the previous year.

The third scenario, involving a possible eruption northeast of Stóra-Skógfell, carries risks including gas emissions, ashfall, and lava flows, especially if the eruption is vigorous and winds are unfavorable. Bergdís emphasized the importance of preparing for the possibility of more powerful eruptions in the future, urging the consideration of mitigation strategies in light of these scenarios.
