Violence, threats, and robberies have become alarming issues at Korsholms högstadium in Mustasaari, Ostrobothnia. A letter submitted by 40 school staff members to the municipality highlighted these problems along with heavy workloads and a lack of resources. They called for clear rules and guidelines to handle difficult situations.

In recent years, reports of threats of violence have increased among teachers, according to the Teachers’ Union (OAJ), especially in the Ostrobothnia region. This rise in violence reflects a broader societal issue, according to OAJ representatives, as deteriorating social conditions and uncertainties manifest in school environments. Teachers often feel reluctant to discuss their fears, as they grapple with feelings of shame for being afraid of their own students.

Kari Nieminen, head of the OAJ’s Ostrobothnia branch, expressed concern that problems in schools might worsen, noting that large urban areas in Southern Finland are already facing such challenges—a trend that may soon reach rural areas.

In response, Mustasaaren’s education officer, Linda Felixson, confirmed the temporary hiring of additional playground supervisors to enhance safety. A recent survey indicated that 96% of students feel safe at school, although some highlighted overcrowded classrooms and narrow hallways as sources of discomfort.

The situation at Korsholms högstadium is reportedly calming, as school resources have increased in recent years, according to the education committee. However, Felixson noted that while many staff members may feel unsafe, others do not share the same perception. Ensuring a collaborative approach among staff and increasing awareness of safety is essential as a new school campus prepares to open, serving multiple schools in the area.
