Orpo government aims to halve social assistance recipients in Finland

Social assistance is a last-resort form of support offered to individuals with no other options for financial sustenance. The government led by Petteri Orpo aims to halve the number of social assistance recipients and achieve savings of 100 million euros in related costs.

The first step in this effort involved tightening rental norms for social assistance. Maximum rent caps have been established for different locations, meaning that if an individual’s rent exceeds this limit, they cannot receive assistance for the excess amount. The government anticipates that this adjustment will save around 30 million euros.

A working group from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health is tasked with proposing additional measures by the end of the year to secure another 70 million euros in savings from social assistance.
