Tampere’s tram network and the tram manufacturer Škoda Transtech have signed a contract for the procurement of additional modules to extend eleven existing trams. The cost of the extensions is approximately €18 million. This initiative aims to ensure a high service level for the tram system and to meet increasing demand. According to a statement, tram passenger numbers have been growing faster than anticipated. Each extension will increase a tram’s capacity by over 30%, from 264 to 345 passengers.
Pekka Sirviö, CEO of Tampere Tramway, stated that a larger passenger capacity will allow for optimal transportation intervals of 7.5 minutes across the entire line. To address afternoon rush hour congestion, tram frequency has already been increased, which has required additional rolling stock and led to rising costs. In the future, this higher frequency would also necessitate more frequent bus connections, resulting in increased expenses for bus transportation as well.
Mika Periviita, director of Nyssen public transport, mentioned that maintaining the 7.5-minute intervals would save approximately €2 million annually in public transport operating costs.
The procurement includes two phases; in the first phase, Škoda Transtech will produce a prototype for the additional modules at its Otanmäki factory in Kajaani next year. After installation, the tram will return to Tampere for testing, with type tests commencing in 2026. Once validated, production of ten additional modules will commence. Deliveries of the extended trams are expected to begin in summer 2027, with the full set operational by summer 2028. The current tram network can accommodate the new 47-meter trams, with necessary modifications to the Koskipuisto stop scheduled to be completed by 2027.
