Sweden investigates organized crime infiltration in HVB homes after police report revelation

At the end of August, a previously confidential police report was made public, revealing that organized crime has penetrated the market for HVB homes (residential care homes). In an interview, Peter Allheim, a commissioner at the National Operational Department (Noa), described the findings as both alarming and a systemic threat.

In response, the government has tasked the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) with enhancing oversight of HVB homes. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer and Social Services Minister Camilla Waltersson Grönvall have summoned IVO, the Swedish Economic Crime Authority, and the police for a meeting. This meeting is scheduled for early Thursday morning at Rosenbad, aiming to “determine” immediate measures to prevent gang-related criminals from operating HVB homes.

“Everyone must now do their utmost to halt these operations. Immediate action is required, along with long-term preventive measures,” the ministers stated in a joint comment.

The opposition Social Democrats have criticized the government for not acting swiftly enough on the issue and have therefore called Waltersson Grönvall to attend the Social Affairs Committee.
