A lawyer from the Confederation of Icelandic Employers has stated that the Icelandic Trade Union Confederation (ASÍ) has deviated from a 2018 agreement regarding temporary staffing agencies. It is crucial to engage in constructive discussions about human trafficking and exploitation in Icelandic labor markets.

Maj-Britt Hjördís Briem, a legal expert, commented during an interview that the situation for foreign workers in Iceland reveals concerning issues associated with temporary staffing agencies. She noted that many foreign workers face harsh treatment and some may even become victims of human trafficking.

Briem emphasized the importance of supporting companies that adhere to fair practices, as the presence of unethical businesses undermines the competitive standing of compliant employers. “We must protect companies that are doing well and following the rules, as this is compromised by ‘black sheep’ who wish to profit from the labor of others.”

The reality for foreign workers in Iceland was highlighted recently in a news program, illustrating the dark sides of employment that can accompany such labor arrangements. Listening to the complete interview is possible through the provided media player.
