Johannes emphasizes safety measures following tourist fatalities in Iceland

Johannes Thor Skulason, the director of the Icelandic Tourist Board, has emphasized the ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures at popular tourist sites. Despite significant advancements, he acknowledges that completely preventing accidents remains a challenge due to tourists’ varying abilities to assess risks.

Following a recent incident where two foreign tourists lost their lives, Johannes noted that no specific registry exists for tourist accidents, which could assist in improving safety protocols. As the number of tourists has surged in recent years, challenges for the tourism industry have naturally increased. He highlights that various safety measures have been implemented, including better signage and improved information-sharing processes, which have reportedly yielded positive results.

However, Johannes stresses that ultimately, it is up to visitors to heed warnings, understand the risks, and remain vigilant, particularly regarding weather conditions. He pointed out the complexity of managing accidents within Iceland’s unique natural environment, noting that while tour guides are proactive in educating tourists about potential dangers, reaching the approximately 60% of visitors who self-drive remains more difficult.

The director insists on the necessity of enhancing and streamlining communication regarding hazards to effectively inform tourists. He states that increasing the quality and accessibility of information is crucial in helping visitors navigate the risks associated with Iceland’s diverse landscapes.
