Travel disruptions reported in East Iceland due to icy conditions on Fjarðarheiði road
Travel disruptions occurred in East Iceland yesterday as bus services were canceled due to slippery and icy conditions on Fjarðarheiði leading to Seyðisfjörður. Several vehicles faced difficulties navigating the road.
Rúnar Snær Reynisson reported that buses had to turn back due to the adverse weather. The situation on the mountain pass was exacerbated by the conditions, resulting in a temporary blockage for vehicles. The morning was especially targeted for travel, with both the Norræna ferry and cruise ships arriving in Seyðisfjörður, which meant significant potential income for local tourism. Ólafur Pétursson, who had planned to operate bus services, halting them after consulting with the Road Administration regarding serviceability on the highland route.
Ólafur expressed concerns over the recurring nature of these incidents each autumn, noting that such conditions are often predictable. He emphasized that these cancellations lead to considerable financial losses for both individuals and businesses, lamenting that timely preventative measures were not taken.
The Road Administration stated they responded as quickly as possible, highlighting that winter services are typically not initiated at this time of year, although contractors were dispatched. Vehicles attempting to traverse mountain roads in the fall must be better prepared for changing weather conditions.
Local officials noted that the construction of Fjarðarheiði tunnels is a priority to prevent such disruptions, pointing out the risks associated with seasonal weather changes and the implications for tourism and the local economy.
