Authorities investigate significant burglary at Elko stores in Skeifan and Lindum
Authorities are investigating a significant burglary that occurred over the weekend at multiple Elko stores, resulting in the theft of goods valued in the tens of millions. The break-ins took place in Skeifan and Lindum during the early hours of Monday. Four individuals have been ordered into custody, with suspicions that they are linked to organized crime.
Three men and one woman were detained due to their involvement in the theft, while three others were also apprehended; two of them have since been released, and the third will undergo questioning today. Heimir Ríkarðsson, an assistant chief police officer in the capital area, indicated that the operation appeared well-planned, noting that the suspects were captured on camera making multiple trips, collecting large quantities of goods and cash.
The exact amount stolen has not been disclosed, but it is suggested to be substantial, exceeding tens of millions. The stolen items remain unrecovered, and Elko released a statement indicating the need for inventory assessments to evaluate the extent of the loss. Consumers may experience a shortage of certain mobile phone models as a consequence of the theft.
Police were able to identify and apprehend the suspects within less than 24 hours. All are foreign nationals. Heimir noted that a review of security footage led to suspicions about a specific group, which police acted upon promptly.
Further investigations are ongoing into whether more individuals may be connected to the incident, highlighting the possibility of organized crime involvement.
