Finland municipalities seek increase in discretionary state grants amid financial challenges
This year, 72 municipalities in Finland are seeking an increase in discretionary state grants, according to the Ministry of Finance. The total amount requested is nearly 87 million euros. This marks an increase from last year, when only 56 municipalities applied, the lowest number recorded in the 21st century.
On average, municipalities are requesting an increase of 127 euros per resident, but some are seeking significantly higher amounts. For instance, Ähtäri, facing challenges with its zoo that has led its panda population into a precarious situation, is applying for 2.6 million euros. This translates to 489 euros per resident when divided by the local population.
