Oulu receives €25 million government funding for railway yard development
The city of Oulu has received nearly €25 million in funding from the government for the development of its railway yard. This funding will be used to construct new station tunnels and platforms, as well as to increase passenger capacity. On Monday, it was announced that Oulu would receive €24.5 million specifically for this project, with an additional €9 million contributed from city funds.
According to project manager Arja Lesonen from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the plans include a new intermediate platform and renovations of the existing platforms, which will increase the total number from three to five. The current intermediate platform will also be elevated. New underpasses are set to be constructed for the station as well.
“The existing station tunnel will be designated solely for cycling and pedestrian use, while a new tunnel will be built adjacent to it. Additionally, a new underpass will be constructed at the southern end of the railway yard to facilitate pedestrian movement between platforms,” Lesonen explained.
The design plans for the project are expected to be made available for public viewing this autumn, after which they will require approval from Traficom. City engineer Eelis Rankka emphasized the significance of securing this funding, noting that upgrades have been in the pipeline for a long time.
“We have seen a significant increase in passenger numbers traveling by train from Oulu, with current statistics showing 1.8 million annual passengers,” Rankka stated. He anticipates that construction preparations could begin as early as next year, with completion targeted within four years.
In addition to the railway yard development, a new bus station and residential buildings are planned for the area. “I believe this will serve as a catalyst for development in Raksila,” Rankka added.
