Hornafjörður municipality to face indefinite strike as AFL trade union members vote overwhelmingly in favor

The municipality of Hornafjörður is set to face an indefinite strike starting Wednesday next week, as all employees represented by the AFL trade union have voted overwhelmingly in favor of the industrial action. A significant 85% of members supported the strike, with approximately 11% opposing it and about 2.6% abstaining, resulting in a turnout of 62% from the 124 eligible members.

The strike will affect nearly all institutions within the municipality and is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on October 2. The union president expressed satisfaction with the vote outcome, emphasizing the strong support among members for standing up for their rights during ongoing contract negotiations.

Talks between the municipality’s management and the union commenced last Friday, but negotiations did not occur until after the voting had taken place. The union leader hopes that a resolution can be reached within the week, citing the importance of solidarity as discussions progress.

Should negotiations fail to yield an agreement, the strike will commence as planned next Wednesday.
