An increase in abortion procedures is anticipated this year, according to Diana Reynstind, a specialist in women’s health. Last year saw the highest number of registered abortions in 14 years. In 2009, only 51 abortions were recorded.
Reynstind noted that they have observed a rise in referrals for abortions over the past two years.
In the Faroe Islands, abortions can be carried out under specific conditions up to 12 weeks gestation. The medical guidelines permit abortion in cases such as:
– When the woman’s health or life is at risk. – If the pregnancy results from rape or similar offenses. – If the fetus is at risk of serious physical or mental disabilities. – If it is assessed that the woman will be unable to care for the child due to severe mental or physical challenges.
The ongoing discussions and data reflect changing societal attitudes towards reproductive rights and access to healthcare in the region.
