How is it possible that one of Finland’s most secure buildings has been vandalized? Aleksi Hosioja, the Head of Security at the Finnish Parliament, provides answers.

First, how did the vandalism occur? Hosioja explains, “We have an open society, and the main steps of the Parliament House are a public space. Access can be gained by simply walking or running onto the site. Therefore, such actions are physically possible.”

Did the security measures at the Parliament fail during this incident? Wasn’t the building under 24/7 monitoring? “In my view, the security arrangements did not fail in any way,” he asserts. “We do have surveillance, and this incident was indeed detected. An immediate response was made.”

Will all the vandalism be cleaned up? “The best forces are working on it,” Hosioja notes, though he cannot predict what the final outcome will be.

What else would you like to say about this case? “In my experience, such stunts rarely gain support in practice. The act is, of course, reprehensible. The police are currently investigating the matter.”
