Animal welfare organization rescues kittens from truck at Naantali harbor in Finland

On Tuesday, an animal welfare organization in Varsinais-Suomi undertook an unusual rescue mission. A truck driver departing from Naantali harbor discovered three newborn kittens among his cargo. The mother cat had made a nest for her kittens on a pallet in a storage facility at the harbor, and they were inadvertently loaded onto the truck along with the pallet.

The kittens, estimated to be around 4-5 days old, are currently in the care of the Turku Animal Welfare Society. Sari Pesonen, the organization’s director, reported that the weakest kitten, named Sisu, unfortunately passed away overnight.

The remaining two kittens, named Scania and Volvo, are reportedly doing well under the circumstances, despite having some health issues. “The kittens had infected umbilical stumps, hernias, and minor leg problems. They do require treatment, but they have a good chance of surviving,” Pesonen expressed.

Additionally, the Turku Animal Welfare Society organized a trap operation that evening around the area where the kittens were found, successfully capturing the mother cat. According to Pesonen, the mother immediately began caring for her kittens, despite showing signs of stress.

“There are a number of stray cats in the harbor area. Unfortunately, such incidents can occur when kittens are born in the wild,” she noted. Pesonen credited the sharp eyes of the truck driver for the kittens’ rescue. “Kittens of that age wouldn’t have survived long without their mother,” she praised.
