Norwegian adventurer becomes first to visit 600 DNT cabins in Agdenes
Flags have been raised at the final stretch of the trail leading to Klatrehytta in Agdenes, Trøndelag, to welcome Per Jan Ørborg. Upon his arrival at the new cabin, he is greeted by friends, former colleagues, and representatives from the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT).
Since 2013, Ørborg has dedicated his vacations and spare time to visiting approximately 600 cabins operated by DNT across Norway. He becomes the first person to accomplish this feat. “Why? I must be crazy! I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors,” says Ørborg.
Most of the DNT cabins are accessible only on foot, adding to the challenge. This year alone, he has visited around 75-80 cabins. Ørborg meticulously plans his trips, determining daily activities while remaining flexible to changing weather. “Hiking boots wear out every three to four years, so I always have to get new ones,” he adds.
Despite his adventures, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing; he has faced challenging weather conditions and uncomfortable moments with wet gear. “It can be quite disheartening to continue with soggy socks and shoes,” reflects the nature-loving retiree.
DNT Information Officer Jonny Remmereit expressed his admiration for Ørborg’s achievement, noting the diverse experiences he gained from both sunny days and storms. Remmereit remarks that few visitors aim to see all DNT cabins, as most use them as starting points for other excursions.
In recognition of his accomplishment, Ørborg received a special red key from Remmereit, symbolizing his extensive exploration of Norway’s stunning hiking cabins. As new cabins continue to be built, Ørborg acknowledges the challenge of maintaining his achievement, indicating it could be a lifelong endeavor.
