VG members propose government dissolution at national congress in Iceland

A group within the Icelandic political party, VG (The Left-Green Movement), is calling for the dissolution of its current government coalition. This proposal will be discussed at the party’s national congress scheduled for next weekend.

Nine party members have submitted a motion for the dissolution, which is detailed in the draft resolutions available on the congress’s website. The members supporting the motion include Andrés Skúlason, Auður Alfífa Ketilsdóttir, Einar Ólafsson, Gudrún Margrét Guðmundsdóttir, Halla Gunnarsdóttir, Helgi Hlynur Ásgrímsson, Saga Kjartansdóttir, Steinunn Rögnvaldsdóttir, and Sveinn Máni Jóhannesson.

In the accompanying commentary, the group argues that regardless of the area of concern—whether it be environmental protection, social welfare, or economic regulation—the coalition partners, particularly the Independence Party, have increasingly prioritized the interests of financial capital over those of the public.

The reasons for the proposal include a desire for new elections, although it does not explicitly call for an immediate termination of the coalition. Infrastructure Minister Svandís Svavarsdóttir, interviewed earlier, stated that she had not seen the motion but considered it unwise to end the coalition. Svandís has announced her candidacy for the party leadership.
