Felix Smith, a TV presenter and long-time dog owner, expressed his sadness over the increasing number of dogs being surrendered to shelters. He noted that the organization Dyrenes Beskyttelse has already received as many dogs this year as in the entirety of the previous year, and the waiting lists for surrendering pets are long. Smith, a self-proclaimed dog lover and owner of a cocker spaniel, hopes for greater regulation and more public awareness about the responsibilities of dog ownership.

He cites Sweden’s initiatives as a positive example, highlighting their legislation, which stipulates that dogs cannot be left alone for more than six hours at a time. This law has led to increased services like dog daycare facilities.

Denmark’s Minister for Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries, Jacob Jensen, acknowledges the situation but emphasizes existing initiatives, including a new animal welfare agreement and guidance provided by the Food and Veterinary Administration. Sellers are now required to provide a care guide to prospective dog owners.

While Jensen recognizes the need for accountability among pet owners, he believes legislation may not be the most effective solution. He argues that individuals considering a pet need to understand the associated costs and time commitments. Jensen expresses a willingness to explore further measures to support responsible pet ownership.

The discussion unfolded during a recent episode of Aftenshowet, where insights on animal welfare were shared.
