New fertility clinic opens in Iceland, increasing access to IVF services

Another fertility clinic has opened in Iceland. Named Sunna Fertility, it is co-owned and operated by Ingunn Jónsdóttir and Þórir Harðarson. Until now, the country has had only one clinic offering IVF services.

Sunna Fertility has received operating approval from the Ministry of Health and plans to formally open its clinic in Evuhúsi at Urðarhvarf in the upcoming autumn months, according to the company’s announcement. For years, there has been just one operational fertility clinic in Iceland, but the opening of Sunna will now make it two.

The announcement highlights that between 2018 and 2022, over 2,000 individuals or couples underwent IVF treatments in Iceland. It also notes a growing trend of people seeking fertility services abroad; while health insurance covered IVF treatments for seven individuals receiving care overseas in 2020, this number rose to 62 in 2022.

The founders of Sunna Fertility, Ingunn and Þórir, are both experienced professionals in reproductive medicine, with Ingunn being an obstetrician and gynecologist, and Þórir a fertility specialist. They both bring decades of experience from their work in Iceland and Sweden. Additionally, they are joined by Kristbjörg Heiður Olsen, an obstetrician and gynecologist, and nurse Hulda Hrönn Björgúlfsdóttir, who are also passionate about providing exceptional care and support in the fertility journey.

Moreover, the company Ósar hf. is also a shareholder in Sunna Fertility.
