Red Cross opens Nordly care center for homeless individuals in Aalborg

Individuals discharged from hospitals after illness or surgery often require some quiet time and a few days of rest before returning to their daily routines. Those seeking assistance at the new care center in Aalborg are in significant need of tranquility and recovery. The Red Cross has opened a facility called ‘Nordly,’ offering homeless individuals up to 14 days of rest, meals, and accommodation.

With over 300 homeless people in Aalborg, the demand for such services is high. Many of these individuals lack a stable home environment to recuperate after hospital stays. At the new care center, guests will have access to a private room with a bed and bathroom, as well as communal areas for dining and interaction with staff and volunteers.

The center was established in collaboration with the Region of Northern Jutland and received financial support from the Social and Housing Authority. Nurses at the hospitals will refer homeless individuals to the care center upon discharge.

This initiative is expected to make a significant difference not only to vulnerable individuals but also to the community as a whole. It has been emphasized that providing a recovery space for the homeless can prevent unnecessary readmissions to hospitals or emergency healthcare visits, ultimately benefiting the healthcare system.

Currently, the Nordly care center has five available spots. Experts believe that providing post-hospital care to the homeless will improve their chances of recovery, as it is challenging to heal without adequate support and living conditions. The initiative highlights the urgent need for such facilities to support homeless individuals in their recovery journeys.
