The City of Tampere plans to change its practices regarding road closures. In recent years, extensive construction has led to numerous street closures for renovations, which has adversely affected local businesses, particularly brick-and-mortar stores. Mayor Kalervo Kummola highlights that the city has also experienced significant losses in parking revenue due to these closures.

Kummola described the long-term street closures associated with various construction projects as a typical practice for Tampere. In response to these issues, he established a working group last year to assess the management of road closures. This group, known as the Street Space Working Group, comprises representatives from various city services relevant to the topic.

Chairing the working group, Service Area Director Pekka Salmi stated that Tampere must find solutions where construction does not hinder the city’s functioning. The group is set to deliver a final report and recommendations by February 2025.
