Indoor play center Hupikupla opens in Kotka, Finland amid economic challenges

Indoor play centers for children are gaining popularity, but many are struggling due to the tight economic climate. Lassi Heikkinen, an entrepreneur from Kotka, is aware of the challenges in the industry but decided to open an indoor play space called Hupikupla in Kotka, noting a clear need for such a facility in the city.

Heikkinen acknowledges the fear that comes with launching a business in this uncertain environment but expresses confidence that the community will embrace it. To keep costs down, he opted for a model without paid staff. Entrance is granted via a code received upon making an online payment. Parents or responsible adults accompanying children under 16 are expected to supervise.

Heikkinen believes that children will play more freely without hired monitors and has installed a recording camera to monitor the facility in real time. He consulted with the Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) about legal responsibilities and was informed that with the presence of surveillance cameras, a paid supervisor is not necessary.

Additionally, Hupikupla features a first aid station and guidelines for handling potential accidents. Similar facilities without paid staff can be found in shopping centers.

Heikkinen has also found ways to cut cleaning costs by sharing a cleaner with an adjacent gym. Users are encouraged to maintain cleanliness, with rules in place requiring toys to be returned after use and handwashing before entering play areas. The center reinforces the importance of respectful behavior, prohibiting bullying and the use of tobacco products on the premises.
