Svandís Svavarsdóttir, the Minister of Infrastructure, has announced her candidacy for the leadership of the Left-Green Movement at the party’s upcoming national congress this weekend. This decision follows a government meeting held this morning.

Current party leader Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, who is also the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, stated yesterday that he would not seek re-election as party leader. However, he intends to run again for the vice-presidency and to continue as the party’s parliamentary representative for the Southwest constituency.

Guðmundur Ingi took over the leadership after Katrín Jakobsdóttir resigned from her parliamentary position to run for president earlier this year.

Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, confirmed that she does not intend to run for a position in the opposition within the party and has not endorsed any of the currently announced candidates.

In related news, there are reports of a significant decrease in the number of apartments being constructed nationwide, with a 16.8% drop compared to last year. Additionally, issues surrounding police matters and the status of an individual under custody have surfaced.

The political climate is further highlighted by concerns regarding legislative proposals related to pension reforms, with expectations of a strong response from the minister. As the party prepares for its congress, internal dynamics and leadership challenges are key topics among the members and supporters.
