Despite Denmark’s Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen promising nearly 200 billion kroner for the military through 2033, most soldiers are not feeling the impact of this financial commitment. Nicolai Winther, a union representative and sergeant at Vordingborg Barracks, has decided to resign due to the ongoing cuts.

“The budget cuts have had a decisive effect,” Winther explained. Although he considered leaving a few years ago, he was encouraged by the potential reintroduction of the Civil Education program, which was expected to help retain soldiers. However, after witnessing no significant changes over the past couple of years, he now feels disillusioned.

Civil Education (CU) allows military personnel to pursue further education in specific fields, ultimately resulting in a military or civilian certification. This program was eliminated in 2013 due to budget cuts but was reopened for consideration in February 2023 to address soldier attrition within the military.

At the Southern Zealand barracks, budget cuts have led to the cancellation of various activities, courses, and educational programs. Although additional funds are being allocated to the military, the extent of previous savings means improvements are still far away. “We have been aware of these funds for a couple of years, but nothing has happened. The political landscape is aware of this persistent issue; they have systematically reduced our resources over the years, leading us to our current situation,” Winther stated.

Today, Troels Lund Poulsen will present in the parliamentary defense committee to justify the need for 100 million kroner in savings. Winther remains skeptical about meaningful support, stating, “This isn’t new; the politicians know they have been cutting our resources for years.” He will leave the military on January 1, one and a half years before his contract ends.
