Denmark’s Defense Minister faces scrutiny over military budget cuts amid training cancellations

Denmark’s Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen is set to face questions regarding the military’s budget shortfall in a parliamentary session. This inquiry follows significant cuts to planned military exercises and training across the Army, Air Force, and Navy due to a required savings of at least 100 million Danish kroner for the remainder of the year.

Cuts have led to the cancellation of essential drills, affecting the Army’s operational readiness. The 1st Brigade has scrapped its artillery exercise ‘Dynamic Front’ in November and withdrawn from the major ‘Allied Spirit’ exercise next year, crucial for developing a new combat unit. Similarly, the 2nd Brigade will miss a NATO training exercise, potentially compromising the unit’s overall training objectives.

The Air Force has implemented a restrictive hiring policy, limiting the recruitment of new personnel and mandating two weeks of forced leave for all soldiers. Important military exercises and training, including the ‘Vanguard Rescue’ and other critical courses, have been canceled.

The Navy is also feeling the impact, being forced to cancel a significant exercise in England, which was designed to prepare the crew of the frigate Absalon for future missions. This decision jeopardizes the Navy’s ability to contribute to NATO and EU operations, as the ship will not be ready for deployment as initially planned.

In summary, Denmark’s armed forces are grappling with substantial budget cuts that have led to the cancellation of key exercises and training programs, raising concerns about the military’s preparedness and international commitments.
