Lottery winner from Espoo claims €500,000 prize after unexpected discovery

Just a few weeks ago, the lottery ticket “Se Arpa” was hidden among other tickets in a thick folder at K-Citymarket in Sellon, Espoo. A person who won the main prize revealed in Veikkaus’s announcement that they were buying €10 Onnensanat tickets as a casual pastime. Initially, they scratched off eight correct words at home and thought they had won €1,000. Then, two more words appeared, resulting in a grand prize of €500,000.

The anonymous winner mentioned that such a significant win affected their sleep, and they have not yet shared their good fortune with anyone. Despite some luck stories, lottery sales have seen a drop this year. Veikkaus reported that the gaming revenue from ticket sales and prize payouts was 44% less in the first half of the year compared to last year. Ville Venojärvi elaborated that ticket sales decreased by over one-third compared to last year, but specific sales figures remain undisclosed.

Even though sales have decreased, over half a million Finns have purchased tickets this year, a reduction from last year when purchasing did not require mandatory identification. There was anticipation that the introduction of identification would impact ticket sales, especially since the change was implemented overnight, making it impossible for buyers to authenticate previously.

The identification requirement, effective from January 1, is part of a gambling law that took effect in 2021. Consumers must register with Veikkaus and present a Veikkaus card or another accepted form of ID at the time of purchase. This measure aims to prevent gambling-related harm, ease age verification, and create a safer gaming environment. As of June, Veikkaus had 2,535,000 registered customers, with an increase of about 15,000 since the start of the year.

A significant reason for the decline in ticket sales, according to retailer Jani Hietanen from an R-Kiosk in Kamppi, is that tickets can no longer be easily given as gifts. Now, the purchaser must claim any winnings themselves. While traditional tickets remain popular among older customers, there is a growing interest in the convenience of digital gaming, especially with lottery games transitioning smoothly online. However, many still enjoy the physical aspect of scratching a ticket, which is a sensory experience challenging to replicate digitally.
