Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson to not seek re-election as chair of Left-Green Movement in Iceland

Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, leader of the Left-Green Movement in Iceland, has announced that he will not seek re-election as party chair at the upcoming national assembly. Instead, he aims to return to the role of deputy chairperson and continues to express his support for Svandís Svavarsdóttir for the chair position.

In a Facebook post, Guðmundur stated, “I trust no one better than Svandís to lead our movement after the national assembly, and I have communicated my position to her.” He took over as chair after Katrín Jakobsdóttir stepped down from her parliamentary role to run for president earlier this year.

Guðmundur expressed pride in many of the achievements the party has accomplished under his leadership, mentioning reforms in the disability pension system, the establishment of a human rights institution, and issues related to labor agreements. He noted that working with members of the party has been particularly rewarding, highlighting the collaborative efforts across the governmental platform, parliamentary group, party council, local associations, and discussions with people throughout the country. “All of this has contributed to my experiences and has a special place of gratitude in my heart,” he remarked.

In related developments, Jódís Skúladóttir, a member of the Left-Green Movement, has put her name forward for the position of deputy chair, making her the second candidate for this role. While no candidates have declared their intention to run for chairperson yet, Svandís Svavarsdóttir, the Minister of Infrastructure, is seen as a strong contender for the position.
