The South Iceland Police have made significant progress in their investigation into a fatal accident that occurred at Breiðamerkurjökull glacier during the summer. According to Chief Superintendent Sveinn Kristján Rúnarsson, the police are working closely with the Icelandic Tourist Board, which is currently reviewing safety plans from companies operating in the area.

The tragic incident involved a male American tourist who was pronounced dead at the scene, while his fiancée, also American, suffered serious injuries and was transferred to a hospital. Initially, fears arose that two others may have fallen through the ice, prompting an extensive search involving over a hundred responders. However, authorities later confirmed that there were no additional victims under the ice.

In response to the accident, the Icelandic Tourist Board requested safety plans from local businesses near the glacier. The Tourism Director has confirmed that these plans have been received and are now under review. The next steps will be determined upon completion of this process.

There is a strong emphasis on ensuring that the safety plans adequately address unexpected and unconventional incidents, allowing for improvements in safety measures. As discussions continue, it is possible that ice cave tours may be banned during the summer months to enhance visitor safety.
