Survivors demand murder investigation into MS Estonia disaster after nearly 30 years

Nearly 30 years have passed since the Estonia disaster, which claimed the lives of 852 people. Now, 14 survivors, along with about 20 relatives of victims, are calling for a murder investigation into the tragedy. This group is requesting that police and prosecutors take action to recover well-preserved bodies believed to be located near the sunken ship.

The survivors are demanding accountability regarding the seaworthiness of the Estonia and seeking clarification on the presence of other vessels in the vicinity at the time of the disaster. Anders Eriksson, one of the survivors, stated the desire for a thorough investigation, particularly concerning military transports involved.

In February, the Swedish Prosecution Authority announced that it would not reopen the investigation into the sinking of the Estonia. This decision has faced criticism from the Estonia Victims Foundation and family members, although the foundation is not part of the group advocating for the new murder investigation.

The tragic sinking of the MS Estonia occurred during a storm on September 28, 1994, and remains one of the worst maritime disasters in European history.
