Today marks the 175th anniversary of Denmark’s longest-running folk high school, Uldum Højskole, which opened its doors in 1849 and has since been an integral part of the town north of Vejle. Lisbeth Trinskjær, chairperson of the Association of Folk High Schools, expresses her delight for this remarkable milestone, noting that few schools in Denmark can reach such a significant achievement. Kurt Willumsen, the school’s principal, shares his pride, acknowledging the efforts of numerous individuals throughout the years who have contributed to the school’s success.

Founded in a different era, Uldum Højskole welcomed its first students during the Prussian siege of Fredericia, alongside the signing of Denmark’s first constitution by King Frederick VII. However, Willumsen emphasizes that the essence of the school has not changed significantly over the past 175 years. The focus remains on community, fostering new relationships, and helping students become part of something larger while creating lasting memories.

Uldum Højskole has profoundly impacted both the town of Uldum and its surroundings, offering vibrant life through its students and initiatives that invite local residents to engage with the school. Jesper Hammer, chair of the town’s community council, highlights the pride the town feels for the institution, calling it a gift to the community.

Trinskjær believes the celebration also honors the entire Uldum area, as the school has brought joy and value to the locality. The anniversary will be marked by speeches, exhibitions, and performances, with 350 guests in attendance and a special song written by Alberte Winding for the occasion.
