A building fire that broke out Thursday afternoon at around 2:30 PM in Raisio, a city neighboring Turku, is still ongoing. Authorities issued a hazardous smoke warning on Thursday evening due to the dangerous smoke conditions, which remains in effect as thick smoke continues to rise from the site. Residents in the area are advised to stay indoors and close their ventilation systems.
The burning structure is a approximately 10,000 square meter production and logistics facility. According to Petri Nenonen, the duty chief of the Rescue Service of Southwest Finland, operations have transitioned to the post-extinguishing and clearing phase. However, the fire has not been fully extinguished and smoke production remains significant.
“The hall is still engulfed in flames. The fire has been contained and is being extinguished. It is difficult to manage due to the location, and the extinguishing efforts are slow. There’s also a risk of structural collapse,” Nenonen stated.
Currently, firefighters are working on the multi-story roof structures of the industrial building, which is at risk of collapsing, further complicating the extinguishing process.
