In an incident that has sparked outrage in Odder, 31 street trees were cut down over the weekend along Houvej, a main road leading into the town. This act has particularly upset local environmentalist Ib Salomon, who reported the tree felling to the municipal authorities, prompting them to notify the police.

Residents began raising concerns about unusual activity on Houvej, leading Salomon to express disbelief at the situation. The municipality confirmed that 31 trees, including large ash and heather, with diameters of up to one meter, were removed systematically.

According to Salomon, the tree removal likely began just after local government offices closed on Friday, allowing the operation to proceed without interference. He described the scene, saying that by Saturday, it appeared as if the area had been cleaned up. Additionally, the municipality’s investigation indicated that telephone cables had also been severed during the clearing process.

Local residents have voiced strong reactions against the tree removal. Mads Frengler described it as a significant environmental harm, emphasizing the long time it takes for trees to reach such sizes and their role in absorbing CO2. Agnes Daugaard mentioned that the trees were beautiful and part of a picturesque scene along the road, while Bente Egholm Poulsen expressed her dismay, deeming it an act of trespass.

Salomon stated that this issue transcends mere aesthetics, likening it to vandalism. He noted that the municipality should adhere to its policy of planting two new trees for every tree felled. Meanwhile, the police confirmed they are investigating whether the tree felling violated any laws, with knowledge of the individuals involved.
