Polar bear shot and killed on Höfðaströnd in Jökulfjörðum, authorities confirm

A polar bear has been shot and killed on Höfðaströnd in Jökulfjörðum, shortly before 4 PM local time. This was confirmed by Helgi Jensson, the police chief of the Westfjords, during a radio broadcast.

The bear was first reported around noon by a female summer cottage owner who was alone. She observed the animal wandering around her cabin, prompting immediate action. The Icelandic Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to transport law enforcement to the area, while local police also made their way to the scene by boat. Upon arrival, the officers spotted the bear along the beach and decided, in consultation with the Environment Agency, to euthanize the animal.

The incident has raised concerns about the presence of polar bears in the area, a situation almost unheard of in Iceland. The authorities are now assessing the implications of this occurrence, given the rare nature of polar bears venturing onto land in the Westfjords.
