A former school building in Joutseno, Finland, was found burning early Wednesday morning. The police are conducting a fire investigation in collaboration with the fire department. A technical examination will be initiated once the location has cooled down and is safe for investigation.

If there is suspicion that the fire was intentionally set, a criminal investigation will be launched. Preliminary information suggests that the fire may have been purposely started, although there is no conclusive evidence to support this yet.

The Kesola school, where the fire took place, had suffered from indoor air quality problems, leading to its closure in 2017. Joutseno is located in South Karelia and is administratively part of Lappeenranta.
