Nokian Renkaat inaugurates new tire factory in Romania focused on sustainability
Nokian Renkaat has inaugurated a new passenger car tire factory in Romania, following a two-year development project. The opening ceremony took place today, as announced by the company. Remarkably, the factory operates without any fossil fuels, making it the world’s first fully carbon-dioxide-emission-free tire manufacturing facility.
Electricity for the plant is partially sourced from a local solar power station, and the tire production process is described as highly energy-efficient due to the integration of new technologies and equipment.
Located in Oradea in the northwestern part of Romania, near the Hungarian border, the total investment for the factory is approximately 650 million euros. Production of commercial tires is set to begin in early 2025, with capacity expected to gradually increase to six million tires per year.
The facility will not only include the manufacturing plant but also a distribution center focused on tire storage and distribution, a mixing department, and buildings dedicated to maintenance and administration. The company anticipates that the Romanian factory will create around 500 jobs.
