Queen Margrethe recovering well after fall at Fredensborg Castle

Queen Margrethe is doing well following a fall at Fredensborg Castle last evening. King Frederik provided an update to journalists outside Copenhagen City Hall, stating, “My mother is well under the circumstances. Thank you for asking. She is in good hands at Rigshospitalet.” The king was attending a celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Copenhagen Boys’ Choir and has not yet had the chance to visit his mother in person, although he has spoken to her by phone.

He added, “From what I could hear, she sounded good. I am very reassured that she is doing well under the circumstances. We are taking it day by day, and it is the doctors who will decide on further steps.”

Earlier today, it was reported that the 84-year-old queen was admitted to Rigshospitalet for observation after her fall. The palace announced that she would no longer attend a planned event tomorrow celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology at Aarhus University.

Even though Queen Margrethe has passed the throne to her son, King Frederik, she remains active in royal duties. Just yesterday, she participated in the opening of a conference on multiple sclerosis in Copenhagen and was involved in awarding the Rungstedlund Prize at the Karen Blixen Museum on Monday.

In her New Year’s speech earlier this year, the queen cited health reasons as one of the factors in her decision to pass the throne to her son.
