Djúpavogur completes new water supply system to support salmon processing in Búladsá
Residents of Djúpavogur will no longer depend on surface water or fear contamination following the completion of a new water supply, which is vital for the local salmon processing facility to operate. The new water supply, located near Búladsá, is set to begin operations after HEF utilities drilled two drinking water wells in April. Previously, the old water source in Búlandsdal had faced contamination issues due to landslips and heavy rainfall.
Eiður Ragnarsson, a representative from Múlaþing, explained that part of the previous water consisted of surface water, which required radiation treatment and filtration, causing recurring complications. He is optimistic that once the new supply becomes operational, these issues will be resolved.
In Djúpavogur, the Búlandstindur processing facility is engaged in slaughtering salmon raised in the East Fjords. This establishment packages the fish for export and is preparing to implement filleting, which requires dependable drinking water.
Kristján Ingimarsson, quality manager at Búlandstindur, emphasized the importance of clean and reliable water, particularly for the filleting process, stating, “We are slaughtering salmon daily and need to rely on good water.”
The new wells have already been tested and analyzed, meeting all safety standards and providing ample supply for the community. Ragnarsson noted that the new water source could provide nearly triple the amount needed during peak demand, ensuring a stable water supply for the future.
