Esperi Care initiates external investigation into Edit care home in Pietarsaari, Ostrobothnia

The social and healthcare company Esperi Care has announced the initiation of an external investigation into the operations of the Edit care home located in Pietarsaari, Ostrobothnia. This decision follows experiences reported in an article by Svenska Yle regarding the care provided over the past two years. Three anonymous caregivers shared accounts of poor hygiene, inadequate medication management, and chaotic staffing situations.

Katarina Näs, a doctor who worked at the Pietarsaari facility from 2019 to 2023, corroborated the claims, noting deficiencies in the care provided. The external investigation will be conducted by LabQuality, and Esperi plans to release the results upon its completion. According to the company, this decision is part of its regular quality assurance efforts.

Regional manager Patrik Ekström emphasized that while current operations do not identify the alleged issues, the claims are taken seriously. He acknowledged that high turnover among management and care staff during the early years of Edit presented challenges, which have largely been resolved with new leadership and a more stable workforce.

Esperi encourages everyone, including staff and residents’ families, to report any perceived shortcomings, such as through an anonymous whistleblowing channel. Quality director Eeva Ketola stressed that quality is a collective responsibility and highlighted the importance of reporting issues. “We regret if our message hasn’t reached all employees. Moving forward, we aim to ensure that the communication regarding reporting discrepancies reaches everyone,” Ketola stated.
