According to Yle, NATO’s land forces command is set to be established in Mikkeli, Finland. Local Members of Parliament view this plan positively, believing it will invigorate the region in various ways and continue Mikkeli’s tradition as a major military hub. MP Jaana Strandman highlights benefits for transportation, pointing out that it would improve Mikkeli’s accessibility to the airport and road networks, as well as increase job opportunities.
Oskari Valtola also emphasizes potential enhancements to the area’s image. He believes that the NATO command would significantly uplift Mikkeli’s reputation, though he notes that the command’s operations will ultimately determine its impact on the city’s dynamics. Mikkeli currently houses the Finnish Army’s headquarters, and Valtola is confident that there is sufficient space for NATO at the Karkialampi garrison area.
Vesa Kallio views the establishment of the command as a positive signal for Mikkeli and Eastern Finland as a whole. He mentions that there is limited information circulating within Parliament regarding NATO’s plans, asserting that decisions appear to be made through NATO’s framework rather than local lobbying efforts.
President Alexander Stubb addressed Yle’s news in front of the media yesterday, stating that plans are progressing steadily but did not confirm the specific locations for NATO headquarters in Finland. Additional bases are also being considered for Rovaniemi and Sodankylä.
In a related video, Mikkeli’s mayor, Janne Kinnunen, expresses that NATO is a welcome addition to the city.
