Swedish teenager charged after grenade explosion outside jewelry store in Valby, Copenhagen

In the midst of a summer night, a Swedish teenager left his hotel in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, and headed to a jewelry store in Valby, armed with a hand grenade. He initially attempted to smash a window with a stone to throw the grenade inside. When that failed, he placed the grenade on the store’s doorstep before it detonated. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the damage amounted to at least 158,000 Danish kroner. The explosion was so powerful that fragments shattered windows across the street.

The 19-year-old Swedish man is facing charges and is set to appear in court as the first case linked to a rise in Swedish criminals in Denmark during the spring and summer. He is expected to confess to the charges. According to special prosecutor Andreas Christensen, the case is considered very serious because it involves a detonation rather than a shooting.

The young man allegedly received the grenade around 9:15 PM on June 28 and stayed at the Cabinn Hotel near Dybbølsbro before traveling to the jewelry store later that night. The grenade exploded around 3:44 AM. Although the motive is unclear, police and prosecutors are looking into gang-related ties, suggesting the explosion may be part of a larger conflict involving recent incidents.

The attack was reportedly not the teenager’s own idea; it followed “prior planning and agreement with one or more unknown accomplices,” according to the charges. The court case will aim to clarify these connections, though it remains uncertain how much light can be shed on them.

To proceed as a confession case, the accused must provide an unconditional confession that aligns with evidence collected by the police. In addition to this case, charges have been filed against two other young Swedish individuals for attempted murder, which will be addressed at a later date. Sentencing for the 19-year-old is anticipated on Wednesday afternoon.
