The Hämeenlinna Administrative Court has dismissed a complaint regarding the appointment of Touko Aalto as the mayor of Toivakka. The ruling was announced on Thursday.
Local politicians from the Finns Party, Mika Mäkelä and Topi Saarelainen, filed the complaint last July, seeking to overturn Aalto’s selection on the grounds that he lacked experience in municipal roles.
However, the Administrative Court found that Aalto does possess relevant experience, having held trustee positions on councils, including the Jyväskylä City Board. The court concluded that this experience is sufficient for meeting the requirements for municipal roles, noting that fulfilling the eligibility criteria does not necessarily require direct work experience in those specific tasks.
The complaint also argued that Aalto’s selection discriminated against other candidates who met the eligibility requirements. However, the court’s investigation concluded that the municipal council acted fairly and impartially in appointing Aalto to the position.
It is possible to appeal the Administrative Court’s decision to the Supreme Administrative Court, pending approval for the appeal.
