The victim of the shooting incident in Vantaa’s Pähkinärinne is a man of approximately 50 years old with a foreign background, according to police reports. The suspected shooter, who was apprehended by police yesterday, also has a foreign background, as stated by Rauno Jämsä, the lead investigator from the Eastern Uusimaa police department. The police have not disclosed the suspect’s age or any further details about him.
The shooting occurred on Thursday afternoon in a pizzeria located within the Pähkinärinne shopping center. Authorities were alerted about the shooting via emergency services shortly after 4 PM. The injured individual was taken to the hospital, where his condition was initially described as critical, according to Jämsä.
Witnesses have provided conflicting accounts regarding the number of shots fired, estimating between four and ten. “There were multiple shots. I cannot specify an exact number,” Jämsä noted. The police have not confirmed these eyewitness reports as they will be interviewing these individuals as witnesses. The police are treating the pizzeria shooting as an attempted homicide, although the primary charge may change as the investigation progresses.
Police have confirmed that the weapon used by the shooter was a handgun. They also obtained the identification details of the vehicle used by the suspect, which was later spotted by a police patrol in Pirkkola, Helsinki. Jämsä indicated that the arrest of the suspect did not involve any significant drama.
The investigation continues, with police focusing on witness interrogations and reviewing surveillance footage from the shopping center, although it is unclear if cameras are present inside the pizzeria.
