The impending bankruptcy of Kajaani Golf Oy places its player association in a precarious position. If a new operator is not found for the golf course, Kajaani Golf ry may also have to be dissolved. One alternative is for the player association to become a managing entity for the course. However, this carries familiar risks, according to Aleksi Leppänen, president of Kajaani Golf ry, who jested, “Another bankruptcy could follow.” This issue has been discussed seriously within the board.
Leppänen noted that the association intends to propose at its autumn meeting to take control of the golf course and continue operations as an entrepreneur. “There is a strong desire in Kajaani to play golf in the future. We can facilitate the process once we know who the estate administrator is and gauge local interest in managing the course,” Leppänen explained.
Kajaani Golf Oy announced on Tuesday that it is seeking bankruptcy protection. Play on the course will continue until the bankruptcy application is processed and the company is officially declared bankrupt. Between 1991 and 2019, the player association was the largest shareholder in the Kajaani golf course, and it managed operations and sold memberships.
Currently, the association has around 400 members, though Leppänen believes that number could be higher. For example, during the pandemic, membership peaked at about 500. He emphasized that with more members, the financial burden per shareholder would decrease.
Investors are already being sought for potential rescue operations, with the Finnish Golf Association anticipating that a successor to the golf course usually emerges from existing shareholders or other investor groups. Although discussions with the city of Kajaani have yet to take place, Leppänen plans to seek the city’s support if the proposal advances.
