Police in Southwest Finland suspect that a series of wildfires in the Uotila area of Rauma, which began in the spring, were set intentionally. “Most of the early summer fires have been investigated, and we have interviewed several children suspected of being involved,” said Chief Inspector Marja Kiiski from the Southwest Finland Police Department.

In total, eight children have been referred to the local fire department’s Tulipysäkki program, aimed at addressing issues related to arson among youth.

Wildfires have continued this autumn in the same area. A fire was reported in a wooded area near Nikuväyläntie on the evening of August 15. Subsequently, fields adjacent to Nikutie experienced two separate blazes on the afternoon of August 29. Another wildfire was identified near Vuorenpeikonpolku on August 30, where fires had been ignited at multiple locations.

The police are investigating these recent incidents under charges of vandalism, fire safety violations, or reckless handling. They are seeking eyewitness accounts or any information regarding the fires from the public. Tips can be sent via email to [email protected] or through SMS or WhatsApp at +358 50 411 7655.

Kiiski emphasized the importance of discussions in homes about the dangers posed by fires to people, animals, and property. Although children under 15 are exempt from criminal liability, they are still liable for damages incurred. “Children are fundamentally responsible for the damages they cause. Compensation amounts for fires can be substantial, and the consequences can significantly impact the arsonist’s future,” Kiiski cautioned.
